Bakersfield

Here I sit, 11 p.m. according to my inner Eastern Daylight Savings time clock, at work waiting for a gel to dry so I can use it in the morning. I'm also missing my family terribly... Absence most certainly does make the heart grow fonder...

Ah, gels. Watch out for the killer ethidium bromide.

I'm sure they miss you as well, as we all do. Hopefully time will pass quickly for you and it will seem like no time before you are back. Wishful thinking, I know! How slowly time seems to drag when you want it to pass. Take care and keep us up on what's going on out there.

Okay, what exactly is a gel?

Glad to hear you made it safely to the other side of the country. Hope the rest of your trip goes well.

It's a jello-like contraption (without the pretty colors) that I use to separate DNA segments of differing sizes. You have to pour it into a casting tray (mold) and wait for it to solidify. You can also use them for separating proteins.

How does it separate the DNA segments? Something like the heavier stuff goes to the bottom, whereas the lighter stuff floats on top?
